 DEPARTMENT OF NURSING SERVICES

The Nursing Department has the responsibility of promoting and monitoring high standard in Nursing Education and practice as stipulated by the Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria. The office of the State Director of Nursing Services is the supervisory authority of the Nurses in the training institutions and clinical areas and other health facilities in the State.

FUNCTIONS  

The Nursing Department performs the following functions:

  • Training of Nurses and Midwives in the State in line with Nursing and Midwifery guidelines.

  • Supervision of Nursing manpower in all Health facilities in the State.

  • Ensuring promotion and maintenance of excellence in Nursing Education and Practice in the State.

  • Statutory representation of the Rivers State Ministry of Health at the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

  • Conduction and supervision of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria final qualifying examination for Nurses, Midwives, Public Health Nurses, Post Basic School of Paediatric Nursing (UPTH), Post Basic School of Accident and Emergency Nursing (UPTH) and Departments of Nursing in Madonna University and University of Port Harcourt.

  • Conducting entrance examination/interview for admissions into the Schools of Nursing, Midwifery, refresher course for Nurses, Post Basic Accident and Emergency and Paediatric Nursing.

  • Supervision of admissions in all the aforementioned schools and institutions.

  • Conduction of Research, Workshops and Seminars to update the knowledge and skills of Nurses.

  • Supervision of all schools of Nursing, Midwifery, Paediatric Nursing, Accident and Emergency Nursing, Public Health Nursing and Departments of Nursing at University of Port Harcourt, Madonna University, Elele, Pamo University to ensure that acceptable standards of Nursing education are maintained.

  • Retraining of all professional development programme (MCPDP) of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to promote and maintain excellence in nursing practice.

 

The Nursing Services Department is located within the Rivers State Secretariat; Block A, 4th Floor from room 33 – 38, all in State Ministry of Health.

 

The Department comprises of four (4) units namely: -

  1. Research unit

  2. Nursing Administrative unit

  3. Inspectorate unit

  4. Education

THE RIVERS STATE SCHOOLS OF NURSING AND MIDWIFERY: -

These Institutions are directly under the control of the Ministry of Health. His Excellency the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Chief Barrister Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike commissioned the Basic Medical Sciences Department in Rivers State University on the 4th July, 2018 of which Nursing Science was inclusive.

1. ADMISSION PROCESS INTO RIVERS STATE SCHOOLS OF NURSING & MIDWIFERY:
- Sales of Nursing & Midwifery Forms.
- Conduction of Entrance Examination into the Schools.
- Marking of the Scripts.
- Shortlisting of Successful Candidates for Interview.
- Shortlisting of Successful Candidates for Admission.

2. COLLECTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF:
- Nursing Licences.
- Notifications.
- Certificates
- Letters from Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) to Schools, Health Facilities and Individuals.
